As a relatively progressive Democrat, I sometimes wonder what realm I am wandering in here. You all probably don't fit into any one pigeonhole like "moderate conservative" or "conservative Democrat." In discussions with my more ardent environmental activist friends, and my more cynical demi-Goth son, the disappointment in Biden is palpable. The problem is, as emigre69 indicates, that we put far too much on the shoulders of one man to pull the proverbial rabbit out of the hat. Our system is supposed to work as a balancing act between three separate but ostensibly equal arms of governance. That a long standing plot on the part of the Repugs to completely upend that balance is beginning to bear fruit. should not surprise us . . but so many people want to go out only every four years to vote, pay no attention to all the other legislative and administrative elections at the state and local level, and wonder why any initiative founders on the various veto points built into our system of government, from the Senate tradition of filibuster to the stacking of the decks against innovative vital candidates or third parties by the national and state level party hierarchies. This is a participatory sport folks. . . and while you all are paying attention on this forum, I fear the great bulk of people who are not. . .

Although our political affiliations are opposed to each other I do agree that the American people fall far short of being aware of what their government is or is not doing. If this Republic hopes to hold in in a competitive world the American voter needs to become aware and  act in the Country's best interest and hold our politicians  accountable for their actions.

Here we go again: 'comparatively sane'.  Love it and TOTALLY agree with you (and Scrooge - I'd forgotten he said that) I'll retire to Bedlam. . . . See ya there!

à 666Rhino : Yeah. . . mind you, I didn't say I agreed with their rationale, just that they were comparatively sane. I love the agitprop coming our of the Lincoln Project, but I remind myself these folks are all former conservative Republican political operatives who pushed many of the same themes of fear and loathing and trickle down economics that Agent Orange simply took advantage of. And don't get me started on the same phenomenon Beau talks about. . . that the Democratic party, for all that it has a progressive wing, is essentially a center-right party. As Scrooge famously said, "I'll retire to Bedlam."

à SeaStories1983 : Love it.  My latest favourite oxymoron:  'rational Republican'.

à Onlooker2022 : I am aware that American definitions of Left and Right are so out of synch with the rest of the world, not even on the same spectrum. You might find this piece, dated as it is at the present time, to still be relevant.

At this point, the more rational Republicans are not in the ascendancy within the party, and I suspect that party will actually end up splitting. Whether that bodes well for the country remains to be seen. . . because the MAGA contingent is so far off the charts in their fanaticism, I think they are ready to bite anyone on the leg that they disagree with. Stay tuned.

The system in some ways is like the UK. It is deigned to make it almost impossible for anyone new to challenge the big two parties. First past the post, single-seat elections result in much less opportunity for smaller parties to gain a voice. People looking at the US from overseas are left stunned by the animosity between the two parties and their followers - especially since they are fundamentally not that different from each other, even though they claim they are. To hear GOP people speak of Dems as "the left" to a European is entitely laughable. Both US parties would be regarded as right of centre in Europe.

à SeaStories1983 : Only Australia (as far as I'm aware) has the NO VOTE box on the voting form, but then they have to vote - it's a criminal offence in Australia not to vote.  Quite right - enough people died to ensure we have that right.  If you want to protest fill in two or three voting boxes - that will ensue the vote is "spoiled" and not used.

à 666Rhino : Agreed if they do not vote and want to complain I tell them you didn't take the time to vote, you are probably the type to dodge a draft, and have no reason to complain because they don't do anything.

So many truths to this post. A system geared up for the few - why it’s important that people do participate and pay attention on how our fragile democracy is being handled.

à 666Rhino : A valid point. I have no authoritative reason to make that judgement. . . some people think their non-participation is a form of protest, a passive participation. I don't get that, but what can I do about people like that? Morally and ethically, of course, I absolutely agree with you. And would be tempted to slap them upside the head with a d*ea*d fish, to boot.

That said. . . I vote regularly, at all levels: federal, state, local. So-o-o critical. Thanks!

One personal comment I will add.  I am often drawn into political discussions and whenever that happens I always ask:  Did you vote in the last election?  The answer is almost always "no".  If that is the answer then I ALWAYS say:  I'm sorry but you are simply not qualified to take part in this discussion - and I terminate the talk/chat/discussion/argument there and then.

Bizarre that you can post your comment as a post but not as a comment on Ella's post. it would be ironic if you created a much more popular forum for discussion !
